At the 30th ESB Economic Forum, this very balancing act was discussed, along with the kind of future we want to shape.
On 28 April, ESB Business School hosted the 30th ESB Wirtschaftsforum, a milestone for an event that has shaped the dialogue between business, politics, and society since 1998. This year, one of the students founding the event, Alexander Luft, returned. The ambitions were high from the very beginning. The inaugural event’s patron was the then Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Alexander Luft looks back with a smile. ‘I don’t know if he wasย ever made aware of it, but at least we received a greetings message from him.’
Thirty editions on, the question the 2026 forum placed on the table was this: ๐ช๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐น๐ถ๐๐? The theme brought together six voices from business, politics, and philosophy.
What began in 1998 with great ambitions is now a firm contribution to the dialogue between business, politics and society on the campus of Reutlingen University. One of the founders returned for the anniversary edition: Alexander Luft recalled the beginnings of the format and quoted AI on the question of what the ESB Economic Forum was: A “debate radar with talent proximity”. An apt snapshot for an event that has been reinventing itself again and again since its founding.
Under the guiding theme “The Price of Morality โ Balancing Act between Social Responsibility and Economic Power”, experts from politics, business and society discussed the limits and possibilities of a system that is equally dependent on solidarity and performance.
