 Some of Dublin City University (DCU) Business School’s second-year undergraduate students recently joined KPMG Ireland for an immersive Insight Day.

This visit provided students with an in-depth look at the career paths, culture, and skill sets that shape success within one of Ireland’s leading professional services firms.

The purpose of the event is to give DCU students exposure to life at KPMG, demonstrating the practical career opportunities available to new graduates in professional services. A range of structured activities enriched the day, including a presentation by DCU alumnus and KPMG Partner, Joe O’Mara, who shared his journey from student to Partner, highlighting the importance of pursuing a career path that offers both challenge and fulfilment. “Listening to Joe O’Mara share his academic and professional journey, along with his perspective on the value of continuous learning, ignited a positive energy in our students as they begin planning their own career paths” stated Dr Julie Bertz.

A critical thinking workshop challenged students to apply decision-making techniques to a complex business scenario, fostering essential skills in group dynamics and problem-solving. Students tackled a business dilemma, analysing it from multiple viewpoints through methods like dialectic reasoning and devil’s advocacy. This exercise illustrated the importance of critical thinking in business contexts, enabling students to recognise the impact of collaborative analysis and avoid common pitfalls like groupthink.

The Insight Day also featured a session on effective communication delivered by The Communications Clinic and a networking lunch with KPMG staff, including recent graduates. These interactions gave DCU students the opportunity to engage directly with professionals who have successfully transitioned from academic to full-time roles, allowing them to gain insights into KPMG’s supportive, growth-oriented work culture.

Elon Professors investigate the rise of “ghosting” in job applications

In today’s fast-paced, swipe-right world, ghosting isn’t just for bad dates anymore, it’s sneaking into the professional scene. Brian Lyons, Love Term professor of management at the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business, has published research to uncover why applicants are disappearing from the hiring process without a trace.

Ghosting occurs when one party abruptly cuts off all communication without explanation. In the context of job applications, this means applicants not showing up for interviews or failing to respond to job offers, or employers not getting back to candidates after initial interactions.

In the co-authored research, titled, “The vanishing applicant: Uncovering aberrant antecedents to ghosting behavior” published in the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Lyons and his colleagues explore this phenomenon from the applicant’s perspective.

Goodman School of Business welcome Fouad Ben Abdelaziz from NEOMA Business School in the Luncheon Speaker Series.

The Distinguished Professor and Head of the MSc Artificial Intelligence for Business at NEOMA Business School will present his research during his talk, Multi-objective Optimization with Applications in Finance and Management, on Friday, Nov. 22 in Sankey Chamber.

Published in numerous journals including the European Journal of Operational Research and the Annals of Operations Research, Abdelaziz has also served as Guest Editor for special issues of reputed international journals.

As businesses continue to push for greater gender parity, the data is clear—flexible working is a key enabler in getting more women into senior leadership positions.

According to Grant Thornton’s Women in Business Report 2023, businesses that offer hybrid, flexible, or home working outperform those that don’t when it comes to women in senior management roles. In fact, the more flexible the workplace, the more we see women rising into leadership positions. 🌍

But the work isn’t done yet. While women now hold more senior positions than ever—28% of mid-market businesses now have a female CEO or MD, up from 15% in 2019—there’s still more progress to be made. The push for gender parity at senior levels is critical, and intentional actions are needed to accelerate the momentum.

External pressures, such as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards, are also driving the need for more diversity at the leadership table. Companies are not only responding to the demand for gender balance but are also finding that diverse leadership teams lead to more innovative, effective decision-making.

The Strategy Lab within the Business Strategy course at UniversitĂ  Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

Held by professors Marco Minciullo and Giacomo Ciambotti, it was an experience that saw the students work for two months on real cases proposed by two internationally renowned companies, Kellanova and NOW (SKY).
The projects were presented directly to the representatives of Kellanova and NOW, with 16 groups dedicated to each company. An opportunity that allowed students to test themselves, confronting concrete business problems and devising innovative strategic solutions.

“It is always a great food for thought to meet young people and listen to their proposals for innovation. The entertainment industry is constantly evolving, so gathering ideas from the students of the course always allows us to identify areas of innovation on which to work and improve. The passion and interest they show for our sector fills us with pride and we are happy with this collaboration between hashtag#SKY and the Catholic hashtag#UniversitĂ  that has been active for several years,” said Lorenzo Foglia, Managing Director of NOW, who was present on the final day of the project together with Maria JosĂŠ Pieroni, Marketing Strategy Manager and Jessica Pregnolato, Senior Marketing Manager of NOW.
Marco Erroi, FP&A Director Europe at Kellanova, also underlined the value of the initiative: “A fantastic experience to discuss with the students, in an inspiring workshop, their innovative ideas on our iconic products! I am always impressed by the passion they show for our brands”
